Community Chat #1 Notes

Last Thursday, on July 25th we had the first edition of our Community Chat, I like to thanks everyone who attended, we had a total of 23 attendees.

If case you missed this chat, you still can read the full backscroll of the dev chat here.

WooCommerce 3.7 beta 1

This chat started with WooCommerce 3.7 beta, talking about some of the new features:

  • New Focal Point picker on the Featured Product block.
  • New Product Categories List block.
  • New Featured Category Block.
  • New Products by Tag(s) block.
  • Allow emails “Thanks” wording to be modified via the email settings.
  • New coupon code generate button on the coupon page.

We received some feedback from participants saying that new product blocks are being of great help to non-programmers, this is something that we’ll keep working and improving on WooCommerce in future releases.

And the talk about WooCommerce 3.7 finished talking about the new PHP 5.6 and WordPress 4.9 minimum requirements, this seems to be very welcomed by the community in our chat.

Future versions of WooCommerce

The second subject of this chat was about wishes to future versions of WooCommerce (3.8 included).

Flat tables for Products and Orders

Currently it’s under development, because those changes are massive and need to be made carefully to avoid any issue, we are testing another approaches, improving performance in our Schedule Action library (a beta is coming in August) that will be used to migrate the old data to the new flat tables, note that Schedule Action is already in use by WooCommerce Admin, and to migrate a few data to WooCommerce’s new lookup tables.

As soon we have any news about it we’ll publish in this blog, also talk about in the community chat.

Refactoring PHP classes to use features of PHP 5.6

This is something that the whole WooCommerce core team is looking forward, we should start using PHP 5.6 features to new WooCommerce’s features, and probably some classes should receive updates, but no major refactoring is scheduled for now.

Engaging the community

We received feedback on tools like UserVoice and other methods to better engage the community with WooCommerce core development, currently there’s many channels but not something centralized, we should have news about it soon.

Till Next Chat!

Thanks again to all whom attended. If you have any ideas on how to make our chats more helpful, or if you have a question/topic you would like to discuss, please leave a note in the comments below.

The next chat is scheduled for August 29, 2019 at 16:00 UTC.

Keep yourself in the loop!
