Product Gallery (beta) block: Roadmap update

Starting with WooCommerce 9.8, we will introduce substantial updates to the Product Gallery (beta) block, currently only available as part of the Single Product Template in block based themes. This block, released as a beta feature roughly a year ago, has been a great source of feedback for us. We recognize the need for further refinement before it’s ready for general availability. Our focus is on simplifying the block’s settings, restructuring its functionality, and delivering a better mobile experience.

Why are we making these changes?

We’ve learned that the current version of the Product Gallery block is complex and lacks polish, especially on mobile devices. To ensure this block aligns with the quality you expect from WooCommerce, we’re planning a series of improvements. The goal is to make the block easier to use and more versatile across different devices.

What’s changing?

Here are some of the updates we’re introducing:

  1. Revamped thumbnails: all thumbnails will now be displayed consistently, ensuring a complete visual representation of the gallery.
  2. Pager replacement: the existing pager functionality will be replaced with a simplified “current image / total images” indicator for improved clarity and usability.
  3. Mobile optimization: we’re prioritizing a seamless mobile experience, making the gallery more user-friendly and responsive on smaller screens.
  4. Display all images by default: Currently, the gallery displays only a subset of images, limited by the number of thumbnails. We plan to display all images by default.

How do I know if this affects me?

  • Navigate to the Site Editor of the store you are working on
  • Navigate to Templates > WooCommerce > Single Product Template
  • Check to see if the Product Gallery (beta) block is active on your template

What does this mean for you?

These updates come with some significant changes that may affect how the block functions in your stores:

  • Breaking changes: due to the revamped structure and settings, the block’s feature set will change significantly. This may require adjustments in how you use the block.
  • Frontend compatibility: if you’re already using the Product Gallery (beta) block, we’ll ensure it continues to function on the frontend. However, you may notice changes in available features.
  • Editor adjustments: in some cases, you may need to re-add the block in the editor to resolve compatibility issues caused by the updates.

Preparing for the Changes

To minimize disruption, we recommend reviewing your usage of the Product Gallery (beta) block and planning for potential adjustments ahead of the WooCommerce 9.8 (and further) releases. If you’re using custom styles or extending the block’s functionality, consider testing your changes in a staging environment as soon as the updated block becomes available.

Looking Ahead

This update is the first step in a broader effort to refine and enhance the Product Gallery block. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to iterate and improve.

Thank you for your continued feedback and support—it’s invaluable in shaping the future of WooCommerce blocks. If you have any questions or concerns, please share them in the comments or in our dedicated GitHub discussion, Shaping the Future of the Product Gallery (beta) block.

We’ll share additional details about these changes and provide documentation to assist with migration as we approach the WooCommerce 9.8 release. Keep an eye on our developer blog for further announcements!

I would like to use a lightbox in Product Gallery (beta) block but it seems to be disabled. Any workaround would be greatly appreciated. I have enabled the requisite functions.php support but clicking on the image or view more only opend a page or overlay that shows a list of images with a scrollbar but not the nice lightbox we knew and loved with the old gallery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Hi, thanks for your comment!

This change is intended and was developed in scope of this pull request: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/pull/54803. At this stage, we don’t plan to bring back the lightbox to Product Gallery but aim at keeping this simplified UI with scrollable overlay.

However, we’re still working on and iterating over the block so any additional feedback is welcome!

      1. So what you’re saying is the gallery is useless to many. It needs to be there. People need the feature. Either that or a scrollable mini image gallery so images never open to the useless image overlay with scrollbar. Just remove the block. People demand this feature.

Sorry you see it that way. The assumption is this gives the same capabilities of browsing product images as lightbox but with much simpler UI 🙌🏻

Either that or a scrollable mini image gallery

Can you explain what do you mean by scrollable mini image gallery? Do you mean the Thumbnails? If so, we actually made them scrollable and display all of them. The change will land in WooCommerce 9.9 (related PR: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/pull/56069). Is that what you mean?

hello, how can we add gallery images to variations in the new block editor?

we want to add more than one image, but many images (including the woocommerce image plugin) do not offer a gallery option in the new block editor. so we have to use the classic editor.

      Hi, appreciate the question.

how can we add gallery images to variations in the new block editor?

Do you mean what block to use to display gallery for variation products?

You can use the current default block: Product Image Gallery which allows you to display all images and it display the variation product image when user choose the product attributes in the form.

Product Gallery (Beta) block that this page is about is still evolving. It will support variation products and the same functionality in WooCommerce 9.9 (https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/pull/56160).

we want to add more than one image, but many images (including the woocommerce image plugin) do not offer a gallery option in the new block editor. so we have to use the classic editor.

Or do you mean new Product Editor and adding multiple images with WooCommerce Additional Variation Images plugin? It’s possible the option is not there, in that case we recommend using classic Product Editor as there’s ongoing work on newer one (you may read more details on it here: https://developer.woocommerce.com/2024/11/06/whats-next-in-the-product-editor/).

Let me know if that answers your question.

after installing an update, the lightbox in teh galley beta block has disappeared. that is very annoying. Now the popup contains all images in cascade, that has a very old look expecially on desktop view. In my opinion you should keep the possibility of choice for the develper (lightbox with navigation between pictures, or the cascade version)

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I totally understand how frustrating it is when expected functionality disappears after an update.

Could you share which version you updated from and to? This will help our team investigate.

      Hi Daniele!

Thanks for your feedback. This change was intended and was developed in scope of this pull request: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/pull/54803. Product Gallery is still in Beta and we’re iterating over it and trying to bring the best experience to the buyer. I understand the frustration but we hear you and we’re planning to take another look at the full page gallery layout and consider the options.

  6. Newset version of woocommerce.
