Community Chat #6 Notes

It’s been a while since we had our January Community Chat. WooCommerce teams have been hard at work preparing the 4.0-beta.1 release, and here comes the summary of our chat #6. We were happy to see 17 people attended the chat and also excited to invite our new Community wrangler Jonathan Wold.

If case you missed this chat, you still can read the full backscroll of the dev chat here or read further for a quick summary.

WooCommerce 3.9

We started the chat with the latest news about Woo 3.9, gauging the use of the new version and mentioned the MaxMind integration update being the tricky item to figure out correctly with respect to its new license and regular updates.

WooCommerce 4.0

The main topic of the community chat was to announce the upcoming WooCommerce 4.0, which will include the new WooCommerce Admin user interface, Action Scheduler 3 and an updated UX for Edit Order screen.

The questions about the previously announced project of revamping Order statuses cropped up, but that work is currently on hold and will have to wait for one of the next releases.

The question of migration to Action Scheduler 3 came up. Since Action Scheduler 3 is already part of WooCommerce Subscriptions 3, it gives us some confidence in the migration process which is initiated automatically, scheduled via Action Scheduler itself and is reentrant. For more details about the improvements in the new Action Scheduler 3, please have a look at Ron’s blog post and a great guide for the migration is already published in our documentation for WooCommerce Subscriptions 3.

Moreover, we mentioned that we don’t plan to remove legacy code in the 4.0 release, so the changes breaking backward compatibility are minimal (limited to Action Scheduler 3).

There has been some questions around tax discrepancies and we’re hoping to get those fixed as soon as possible, so please report and discuss those in our GitHub repository.

Community plans

Jonathan Wold, our new Community Wrangler, then took over. He revealed the new mission of WooCommerce:

Democratize Commerce

WooCommerce mission

Where WordPress has become an operating system of the Open Web, we’re hoping that WooCommerce will be similarly successful in the world of commerce.

We’re focusing on making WooCommerce more accessible to entrepreneurs all around the world and making it easy for them to grow their businesses.

Jonathan then continued to define his two main focus areas going forward:

  1. Support and take good care of the WooCommerce community by providing tools and resources to an existing community and help these people to be successful.
  2. Multiply the community efforts by seeing what works in various parts of the WooCommerce community and bringing it to a broader audience.

We’re hoping to improve the existing and build up new communities by engaging more people through meetups and plan to get to 100 active meetups around the world in 2020.

If you would like to become a part of the team Jonathan is creating, please contact @Jonathan Wold via DM in WooCommerce community slack.

Till Next Chat!

Thanks again to all whom attended. If you have any ideas on how to make our chats more helpful, or if you have a question/topic you would like to discuss, please leave a note in the comments below.

The next chat is scheduled for February 27, 2020. Don’t miss the invitation, please follow this blog!
