Addressing Slack Spam

Over the last few weeks, we began to receive some reports from community members that they were receiving spam via DMs.

As a reminder, we generally discourage this behavior in Slack, and prefer that interactions happen in public channels. This is for the benefit of the community, as questions and content in the general channels, may be helpful for future readers.

Next Steps

In an effort to bring more transparency to the moderation process, we have decided to add a moderation channel to the Community Slack. If you are receiving spam in the Community Slack, please reach out to the #moderators channel to make your report so that we can more easily track these issues and make the Community Slack a safer, more welcoming place.

If you encounter behavior which is spam or a violation of the Code of Conduct, please send us a message including:

  1. The content of the message if it is in a private channel or DM, or the link to the message if it is in a public channel.
  2. The slack handle of the account sending the message

As always, we try to assume best intentions. If someone is unfamiliar with Slack etiquette and is sending content which appears to be spam, we always attempt to show them the correct way of doing things.

However, behavior which includes the following will be met with a zero tolerance policy:

  • The use of sexualized language or imagery and unwelcome sexual attention or advances
  • Trolling, insulting/derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
  • Public or private harassment
  • Publishing othersโ€™ private information, such as a physical or electronic address, without explicit permission
  • Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting

Thanks for helping us make our community spaces safe and welcoming.
